Pretty & Powerful: Janelle "Ms. Fancy That"

It's amazing how you meet people and God begin to bring everything full circle. I met this beautiful, talented young lady back in 2010, the beginning of my Entrepreneurial journey. She was a D30 Junior Street Team Member that was very eager, talented back then as she is now. Fast forward, 2019 she has been my daughter and I hair stylist for the past 2 years in addition to providing her services to hundreds in Columbus, Ga & surrounding areas. Her professionalism, technique, & style of doing hair is unmatched. Janelle is sooo full of life, she makes everyone she encounter feel beautiful, confident, ready for the red carpet & you're guaranteed to get a ton of laughs.

Check out her interview below & see why she's Pretty & Powerful.

Janelle Smith, 28yrs old, Hair Specialist

Q: How did you start within the profession you’re currently in & how long have you been in it?

It’s a natural born talent, however Kathy Dewberry my cosmetology instructor in high school made me realize that it was deeper than just doing hair. She made me realize everyone is not born with this talent, which would later become my passion. I first started doing $49 sew-ins in my mother’s dining room at the age of 19, the rest is history. Cosmetology has been financing my lifestyle for 11 years.

Q: What is your inspiration that keeps you thriving?

My inspiration that keeps me thriving is how rapid the hair industry grows, there’s always room to learn more there is no limitations, which allows me the opportunity to excel at my passion.

Q: What has been the hardest part of what you do, that you make look Pretty easy?

The hardest part of what I do is staying afloat during the off seasons… June, July, & January. I normally run specials & take this time to work on my marketing, branding strategies, promotions, learning new techniques and soliciting new clients.

Q: What has been your biggest achievement thus far, that you’re most proud of?

My biggest achievement thus far that I’m most proud of is… making my dad proud by actually sticking to cosmetology and believing in myself the way other people do. Still holding my head high even in the midst of distractions & oppositions in this competitive industry.

Q: What would you say makes you Pretty & Powerful? What do most call on you for? (your superpower)

My ability to transform ladies looks & get them to try new things, styles, etc that may be outside of their comfort zone.

Q. What advice would you give to someone that may be aspiring to enter into the profession or industry you’re in?

The advice I would give is add your own technique, PERFECT and RESPECT your craft.

Q: On a transparent level, name a moment when you almost gave up on your success journey, but found the momentum & power to move forward?

I almost gave up along the way transitioning from salon to salon trying to find my sweet spot, only to learn that God wanted me to go back to the basics and learn what Janelle wanted ultimately for herself, her brand, & career in the hair industry. I have some big plans in the making. ;)

Q. What projects are you working on; that you can share & where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?

I’m currently working on a blog & website that basically gives the pro’s & cons of wearing weave, being natural versus relaxer and more.

Q: In closing what Powerful profound message would you leave to other fellow Pretty & Powerful females climbing the ladder to success?

Stay focused, stay in your bag, stay FANCY, and don’t let anyone discourage you no matter how long it takes you to climb the ladder to success.
