Pretty & Powerful: Mrs. "Get It Done" Charmian Stephens
Mrs. Charmian Stephens, 35 years old, Owner/Operator of Stephens Premium Tax/Business Consultants
How did you start within the profession you’re currently in & how long have you been it?
I started out as a tax professional and that came from me seeing a need that the bulk of society was clueless when it came to filing taxes. Most assumed that tax preparation consisted of giving someone a W2 and waiting on a huge refund. I knew at that point I had to first educate myself of the subject and then produce a company that not only prepared taxes accurately but educated its clients on the dos and don’ts of the process. I’ve been a tax professional for 6 years, and I absolutely love what I do.
What is your inspiration that keeps you thriving?
My inspiration would most definitely be my clients and their need for accurate and professional services. I believe that I’m a game changer in my profession and I dedicate myself to ensuring that society is aware of the ever-changing tax laws and responsibilities.
What has been the hardest part of what you do, that you make look Pretty easy?
Being a business owner is very time-consuming position, however very rewarding. As an Entrepreneur, I spend a lot of late nights and early mornings working, studying, and perfecting my craft. What most see, they seem to believe that it is very easy, however I make those 16-hour days look great. I say all the time that anyone can obtain a business license and a Cash-App, and assume they are in business, but that isn’t even scratching the surface. One must be dedicated and determine to not only succeed, but to also be willing to help others as well. As the owner, regardless as to what is going on personally or whatever, you must still ensure that the business continues to operate. Nobody is giving you a pay check every Friday or every other Friday, so you must commit yourself fully to the brand you are building.
What has been your biggest achievement thus far, that you’re most proud of?
I would have to say keeping my doors open. Often, I see several businesses open and 6 months to a year later they are closed and unable to be located. To be in business year after year and able to maintain my clients, and see a continuous growth is nothing short of a blessing. In my 3-year plan I set to have a 15% growth every year and so far, I have been able to not only accomplish that goal but to also expand my brand. I have been able to add to the services that my company offers to better assist my clients. I’m very proud of the success that I have achieved and look forward to the future and what it holds for Stephens Premium.
What would say makes you Pretty & Powerful? What do most call on you for? (your superpower)
I would have to say my ability to “GET IT DONE” or as most call it “Execution and Resolution” I’ve been titled by my peers as the “Ultimate Entrepreneur” due to my wide array of accomplishing numerous business endeavors and being available to all rising business owners that need that guidance and help starting out. I also assist those that have been in business for quite some time and need motivation, guidance, and encouragement.
What advice would you give to someone that may be aspiring to enter the profession of industry you’re in?
Educate Educate Educate …I cannot stress enough that to operate any business one must educate themselves on the products and or services that they wish to offer. A person cannot be effective in business if they’re not knowledgeable in their profession. Always be willing to go above and beyond for your clients and build trust with them so that they are for certain you will never do anything to tarnish that business relationship.
On a transparent level, name a moment when you almost gave up on your success journey, but found the momentum & power to move forward?
I would have to say, one situation that came about with a client, that had been with my company for a very long time. For some reason this client had it out for me and no matter what I tried to do to fix the situation this client was set on tarnishing my brand and making FALSE statements about my company as well as me personally. I was so hurt, frustrated, and in disbelief that a person could be so cruel that they would attempt to ruin me. As a person of faith, I prayed and sought-after God for answers to this situation. It was later revealed to me that God was testing me or as I call it he was bending me but promised that I wouldn’t break. See on this journey, Gods promises will never return void, but he never said that test and trials wouldn’t come. Immediately my faith was restored, and I forgave that person and went on knowing that all I can continue to do is provide superior service and be the best me I can be. If it’s meant to work it will if not, as a business owner I had to learn that I have to keep moving.
What projects are you working on; that you can share & where do you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?
Currently I am working on a reality series that will display how my staff and I publish The Ultimate Entrepreneur Magazine. This reality show will bring POSITIVITY to REALITY. This is a passion and desire because often our culture is displayed in such a negative light when it comes to reality, so I want to change the game and create positive reality. This show will also be very transparent and real as often, a façade is shown on TV and everyone seems to think things can be accomplished at a microwave rate and isn’t true. Within the next 3 to 5 years I see myself on mainstream TV and a nationwide brand. I absolutely love my platform and want to share it with the world.
In closing what Powerful profound message would you leave to other fellow Pretty & Powerful females climbing the ladder to success?
Take it one day at a time and always believe in yourself. Starting out, those that say that they’re with you end up going another direction and that’s ok. Be confident in what you are aiming to achieve and stay grounded as you excel. Always be willing to give back, reach back and grab the hand of another person and show them the way. Climbing the success ladder can be a very complex task however consistency is key nothing happens overnight, and Entrepreneurship WILL NOT yield a microwave result. I can promise you this, stick and stay the course and you’ll receive the harvest.
